"Black" Tulips

The "puny" tulips (plants) are producing some mighty nice blooms! This morning I had to visit them with a watering can before I could take their picture (pollen!). Strangely enough, the ones in my backyard are darker than the ones in my front yard (same variety!), but who cares? They look good!

That is a gorgeous color. Do you know the name? Very dramatic!

It looks most definitely like Black Hero, the only really dark double, although Uncle Tom is a good dark red double. There are many more black singles, but only the two dark doubles. You are lucky to have your tulips now, I have another three week wait for mine. Colour by the way of 'black' plants is affected by soil, the amount of light and many other factors. I love my black tulips.

Those tulips sure look good! I planted some single "black" tulips (Queen of night) last autumn but they are not yet flowering. The first flower buds have appeared, so another 2-3 weeks I guess. Can't wait!

Yes, Mr. Gaudy Garden, it is a "Black Hero" and I bought the bulbs from Brent & Becky's in Virginia.

Thanks for the insight, Karen. Some of my neighbors have ooh-ed and aah-ed over them, so maybe I'll try some more for next year.

Ellie, you must be "up north". Here, it seems spring came and went overnight. It's 80+ and definitely A/C weather already!
